Overpressure Protection Overpressure Protection
Recent events have caused the gas utility industry to question the definition of reliability. In addition for continuity of service, a reliable system must also have a higher level of safety. To achieve the required level of system safety, multiple layers of overpressure protection must be integrated into existing distribution networks.

Proconex understands the challenges currently facing the gas utility industry.

Gate Stations

Challenges:
  • Large flow capacities require large relief devices.
  • Isolating the gate station will disrupt service to a large number of users.
Solutions:
  • Worker/Monitor Control: Worker/Monitor Control is not a new approach. This is the current single layer approach to overpressure protection and meets current code.
  • Modulating Pilot Operated Relief Valves: This approach provides a second layer of overpressure protection that will not disrupt continuity of service and will allow onsite set pressure verification.

District Stations

Challenges:
  • Utilizing relief valves in densely populated areas would release gas into the atmosphere.
  • Isolation of the district station will cut off end users, unless the distribution system is back fed.
Solutions:
  • Worker/Monitor Control: Worker/Monitor Control is not a new approach. This is the current single layer approach to overpressure protection and meets current code.
  • Slam Shuts: Slam Shuts provide positive isolation of downstream piping and equipment.
  • Modulating Pilot Operated Relief Valves: This approach provides a second layer of overpressure protection that will not disrupt continuity of service and will allow onsite set pressure verification.

Commercial/Residential Stations

Challenges:
  • Implementing a cost-effective solution to thousands of customer sites.
Solutions:
  • Slam Shuts: Slam Shuts provide positive isolation of downstream piping and equipment.
  • Worker/Monitor Control: Worker/Monitor Control is not a new approach. This is the current single layer approach to overpressure protection and meets current code.
